Thanks to Florida Alternative Breaks, I was able to spend Spring Break 2016 on a trip studying educational inequity in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The group of us volunteered at Colegio Miguel Angel Asturias Academy, a private, nonprofit school founded to eliminate the educational disparities experienced by children of the native population in Quetzaltenango. As my first international teaching experience, this week abroad largely impacted my passion for accessing students backgrounds in the classroom and incorporating their personal experiences into learning opportunities. I also gained priceless experience working with students around a language barrier. Moving into my career in education, I am grateful to have had the chance to work with the joyful students at Colegio Miguel Angel Asturias Academy.
